3 Star Strategy Rating

Age group(s) for which this strategy is helpful:
Preschool and Younger
Elementary School

Instructions for using this strategy:
Take your child to the local library or bookstore to select fun books on tape, like those by Dr. Seuss or any others that your child may choose. Take them home. Show your child how to set up the tape in the tape recorder. Have your child sit in a comfy chair with the book or cuddle up next to you. Turn the tape player on and follow the words in the book with your finger. You can do this with your child or your child can do this on his own. Depending on your child's age, it may be a good idea to do this with your child at first and then encourage him to "read" books on tape by himself.

What is the benefit to the child with reading problems?
This strategy provides a way of helping your child connect the spoken word with the written one in an entertaining manner. This technique also provides good training for those children who will need to use taped versions of their academic textbooks since it helps the child become accustomed to the technology and the headgear.
