- German : from the Middle High German personal name Amelung, which was popular in the 12th and 13th centuries. It was adopted in honor of the Amelungen of medieval literature, warriors (in particular followers of Dietrich von Bern and successors of the Gothic royal house) who bore dithematic names of which the first element was amal ‘strength’, ‘energy’.
