Family name origins & meanings

  • French : variant spelling of Burgevin, a nickname for a roisterer, from Old French burger ‘to strike’, ‘to steal or carry off’, ‘to make a noise’ + vin ‘wine’. In Canada, it was first recorded in the forms Bréchevin and Brugevin, also called Langevin (meaning ‘(the) one from Anjou’), in 1668 in Quebec city. The North American forms appear in no modern dictionary of French names.
