  • German (Böhmer) : ethnic name for a native or inhabitant of Bohemia (see Boehm).
  • North German : topographic name for someone who lived by a barrier (German Schlagbaum), or perhaps a metonymic occupational name for a customs collector. Alternatively, in some cases it may have been an occupational name for someone who grew or tended trees or a topographic name for someone who lived by a conspicuous tree.
