Family name origins & meanings

  • Scottish : habitational name from Callendar near Falkirk or Callander in Perthshire. The original form and meaning of both place names is unclear, but it is certain that they were once distinct; later the former name was transferred to Perthshire under the Livingstones, Earls of Linlithgow.
  • Swedish : probably a variant of Carlander, from karl ‘man’ + -ander, ornamental suffix from classical Greek anēr, andros ‘man’.
  • Variant spelling of German Kalander (see Kolander).
  • In some instances, probably a variant spelling of English Callender.
