Family name origins & meanings
- French : Norman or Picard variant of Champeau.
- Etienne Campeau and Catherine Paulo were married in Montreal in 1663, where they raised fourteen children. Two of their sons, Michel and Jacques, with their families, joined the Sieur de Cadillac in the extension of New France to the Detroit area in 1707–08. Descendants of another son, François, followed later to what is now MI and WI. It is believed that all U.S. bearers of the name Campeau are descended from these three brothers.
