• Variant spelling, frequent in LA, of French Cheramy, a nickname from cher ‘dear’ + ami ‘friend’, not perhaps for someone who was a ‘dear friend’ so much as for someone who used the expression a great deal.
• The LA families trace their origin to one Joseph Cheramy, or Cheramie, from Brittany, who married an Acadian refugee, and appears in the records of New Orleans in 1785.
