Family name origins & meanings
- Romanian and Italian : from the personal name Cosma (from Latin Cosmas, Greek Kosmas, a derivative of kosmos ‘order’, ‘arrangement’, ‘ordered universe’). St. Cosmas was martyred together with his brother Damian in Cilicia in the early 4th century ad. Together, they came to be widely revered as patron saints of doctors.
- Possibly a shortened form of the Greek family names Cosmaïdis or Cosmadopoulos, all formed from the personal name Kosmas.
