• Americanized spelling of German Kreisler or Griessler, a topographic name for someone who lived or farmed in an area of sand (see Gries), or (in the south) an occupational name for a grocer, from Middle High German griezmel ‘milled grain’ (from griez ‘sand’, ‘gravel’).
