Family name origins & meanings

  • Americanized spelling of German Krumreihn, possibly from Middle High German krum(b) ‘crooked’ + rein ‘border of a field’, ‘margin’, and hence a topographic name for someone who lived by a field with a crooked edge, or perhaps a nickname for a farmer who plowed a crooked furrow. Alternatively, the name may be from an old personal name, Rumerich, from Old High German hruom ‘fame’.
