- Northern English : probably a variant of the Scottish habitational name Cumstoun, from Cumstoun in Kirkcudbrightshire or from Cumstone in Dumfriesshire. There are places in Cumbria named Cumpston Hill and Cumpstone House, but both take their names from a family called Compston or Cumpston, recorded in the area in the 16th century, rather than vice versa.
