- The Dalrymple family which held the earldom of Stair can be traced to William de Dalrymple, who in 1429 acquired the estate of Stair in Kyle, Ayrshire. In the muster rolls of the Scots Guards in France, the name appears as de Romple. John Dalrymple (1749–1821) served under Sir Henry Clinton in the American Revolution.
