- German (Franzmann) and Jewish (Ashkenazic) : from the personal name Franz + man, which later (after 1678, and hence outside the period of surname formation) came to mean ‘Frenchman’. As a Jewish name it can be either an ornamental name or an ethnic name for someone from France.
