- French : from the Germanic personal name Waldo (from waldan ‘to govern’) or a derivative of gaut- ‘Goth’.
- A Huguenot family called Gaudin, from La Rochelle, was in Quebec city in 1655. Another, from Burgundy, was in Montreal in 1654; and one from Normandy had arrived in Quebec city by 1656.
