Family name origins & meanings

  • French : nickname equivalent to grignard ‘angry’, ‘contemptuous’, from Old French grignier ‘to grit the teeth or curl the lips’, gestures of fierce contempt. The verb is of Germanic origin and was originally probably an imitative formation suggestive of grunting through clenched teeth.
