Family name origins & meanings

  • Southern Italian : according to Caracausi, from Sicilian guastedda ‘focaccia’ (flat loaf) (from Old French gastel, or rather Norman French guastel, wastel), presumably a metonymic occupational name for a baker or perhaps a nickname for a thin person. Alternatively, it may be derived from some minor place name.
