- Muslim : occupational name for a silk merchant, from Arabic ̣harīrī ‘related to or associated with silk’. Harir is also the name of an ancient region on the right bank of the Euphrates River in Syria. The Arabic scholar and writer Abū Mụhammad al-Qāsim ibn ‛Alī al-̣Harīrī (1054–1152) was born, lived, and died in the city of Basra, in southern Iraq.
