Family name origins & meanings

  • English : apparently a variant of Huby, a habitational name from either of two places so called in North Yorkshire. Huby near Easingwold is named from Old English hōh + Old Scandinavian ‘settlement’, while Huby near Stainburn is name with the Old French personal name Hu(gh)e (see Hugh) + Old Scandinavian .
  • Possibly an altered spelling of German Hubbe, a short form of Hubert. In the U.S. it is found chiefly in TX and IN.
