Family name origins & meanings

  • German : probably of Slavic origin, an altered spelling of Gerasch, Jarrasch, Jarausch, or Jarasch, all from the stem of jary ‘lively’, ‘vehement’, or possibly from jar ‘young’, ‘early’. Compare Polish Jaroslaw (see Jarosz). This is one of the German names that were established in Ukraine in the 19th century.
