- Muslim : from an adjectival derivative of Arabic jalāl ‘majesty’, ‘glory’, or denoting a descendant of someone named with this word. It is also found in compound names such as Jalāl ud-Dīn ‘Glory of Religion’. Jalāl ud-Dīn Rumi (1207–73) was a great Islamic mystic poet. Jalāl ud-Dīn Akbar (1556–1605) was one of the greatest of the Mughal emperors (see Akbar).
