- Polish, Ukrainian, Sorbian, Czech, Slovak, and Hungarian (Kabát) : from Polish and Sorbian kabat, Czech, Slovak, and Hungarian kabát ‘coat’, ‘jerkin’, also ‘military uniform’, hence a metonymic occupational name for a maker of short coats or a nickname for a soldier. In Ukrainian the Polish loanword kabat also means ‘skirt’, and may have been applied as a nickname for an effeminate man.
