Family name origins & meanings

  • Altered spelling of German Kahlich, an occupational name for a lime burner (see Kalk, Kalkbrenner).
  • German : topographic name for someone living in a dwelling on piles in a marshy region, from Sorbian kolik, diminutive of kol ‘pile’, ‘stake’.
  • Czech : from kalich ‘chalice’, possibly a nickname for a protestant.
  • Perhaps an altered spelling of Czech or Slovak Kaleš, Kališ (see Kales, Kalis).
