Family name origins & meanings

  • German (Klöppel) : from Klöppel ‘bell-clapper’, hence a metonymic occupational name for a bell-ringer or a craftsman using a clapper-like instrument in his work. Compare Klopfer. The same word was also used to denote a clumsy youth and the surname could equally have arisen from a nickname with this sense.
