- Hungarian : occupational name for a coachman or coachbuilder, from Hungarian kocsi ‘coach’, ‘wagon’, originally kocsi szekér ‘Kocs cart’, from the village of Kocs, where in the 15th century this type of conveyance, with springs, was first made. The modern English word coach and French coche are derived from this Hungarian word, as well as German Kutsche and Czech koči.
