- Polish : descriptive nickname from kus, kusy ‘short’, ‘cropped (hair)’, ‘bob-tailed’ (see Kusy).
- Slovenian and Czech : nickname from kus, an old spelling of kos ‘blackbird’ (see Kos), perhaps applied to someone with a good singing voice.
- Hungarian : from Slavic kus ‘falcon’. This was a totemic symbol of an ancient Hungarian clan, hence a protective name for a member of the tribe.
