- French : from a diminutive of Lauze, a metonymic occupational name for a slater, derived from Gaulish lausa ‘slate’, ‘roofing stone’.
- The first Lauzon to arrive in North America came as governor of New France, in 1651. Other Lauzon families came from Le Mans, France, to Montreal (1656), and from Normandy, France, to Montreal (1656). They are also recorded as <xref>Laurent</xref>, Loreau-Florentin, <xref>Lozon</xref>, and <xref>Vadeboncoeur</xref>.
