Family name origins & meanings

  • South German (Leichleiter) : topographic name, probably from Middle High German laich ‘copse’ + līte ‘mountain slope’. The first element may alternatively be lēgen, southern dialect variant of lēhen ‘to hold land as a feudal tenant’ (see Legleiter).
