  • North German or Dutch : probably from a topographic name, Leinfest or Leinfeste, derived from late Middle Low German leine ‘grazing land with wide ditches’ + vēste ‘administrative district’, hence a name for a farmer who farmed an area of low-lying land or who was entrusted with maintaining the ditches in a district.
