- In 1634 the name was brought to North America by the Rev. John Lathrop (b. 1584 in Etton, Yorkshire, England), a Puritan preacher fleeing religious persecution. He arrived at Plymouth Colony and lived in Scituate, MA until 1639, then moved to Barnstable MA, where his Bible can still be seen.
