• French : from the personal name Malo, which was relatively popular in Brittany in the Middle Ages, having been borne by a 6th-century Welsh missionary to the area. His name is also recorded in the Latinized form Maclovius, and perhaps has some connection with Celtic megalos ‘chief’, ‘leader’.
• Spanish : nickname for an unpleasant individual, from Spanish malo ‘bad’, ‘evil’ (Latin malus).
