  • French and English (of Norman origin) : habitational name from any of the numerous places called Montfort, from Old French mont ‘hill’ (see Mont 1) + fort ‘strong’, ‘impregnable’ (Latin fortis). A Norman bearer of this name, from Montfort-sur-Risle in Eure, near Brionne, accompanied William the Conqueror in his invasion of England in 1066.
