Family name origins & meanings

  • Finnish : ornamental name from Finnish nurmi ‘lawn’ or ‘pasture’. The surname dates from the 16th century, becoming popular in the late 19th century, when it was taken by people who hitherto had no surname, and during the name conversion movement of the 19th and early 20th centuries, when it was frequently adopted as a replacement for a Swedish or other foreign family name. It occurs chiefly in southwestern Finland.
