Family name origins & meanings
- Norwegian : habitational name from any of three farmsteads so named. Two of the farms, in Sogn og Fjordane, are named with Old Norse Óðinsland, a compound of Óðinn (the name of an important Norse god) + land ‘land’, ‘farmstead’. The third, situated in Rogaland, has a first element of uncertain etymology.
- Americanized form of Norwegian Åsland, from Old Norse áss ‘hill’, ‘ridge’ + land.
