It is an Italian name (unexplained), but there is little evidence of an Italian origin in the U.S. However, it is also recorded in French-speaking Canada and it may perhaps be a respelling of French Pécour(t), a habitational name from Pécourt in Loiret or a nickname from pied ‘foot’ + court ‘short’.
