Family name origins & meanings

  • German and French (Alsace) : variant of German Reploegel, a compound of Repp ‘rope’ + Middle High German lāgel ‘keg’, also a linear measure. The term probably denoted a rope of a particular length used for measuring wood and other bulky merchandise and the surname arose as a metonymic occupational name for someone who made such measures or for an official who used one.
