Family name origins & meanings
- Perhaps an altered spelling of the English habitational name Rushall, from either of two places so named, in Norfolk and Wiltshire. In both cases the second element is halh ‘nook of land’; the first element of the place in Norfolk, recorded in Domesday Book as Riuessala, is uncertain; that of the Wiltshire place is believed to be an Old English personal name, Rust.
- Altered spelling of German Rischel (see Rishel).
