Family name origins & meanings

  • German : from Middle High German schubel, schübel ‘bunch’, ‘clump’, ‘tuft’; of uncertain application. In Bavaria it seems also to have been a nickname for a plump little fellow, from the same vocabulary word used in a transferred sense.
