- North German (Schütter) : occupational name for a guard, watchman or warden, from an agent derivative of Middle Low German schutten ‘to protect’. See also Schuetz.
- Dutch : occupational name for a bowman, subsequently a status name for a member of a marksman’s guild, Middle Dutch scut(t)ere. This was also an occupational name for an official who impounded stray cattle.
