Family name origins & meanings
- Southern Italian : probably from Sicilian spinali ‘spiny’, ‘prickly’, applied as a nickname, although some authorities believed that it is of Iberian origin. It may actually be a variant of Catalan Espinaler, a derivative from Espinal, that most probably arrived at the area during the rule of Napoli and Sicily by the Catalano-Aragonese king, in the Medieval Age.
