Family name origins & meanings

  • Indian (northern states) : Hindu (Brahman) name from Sanskrit trivedī ‘one that knows the three Vedas’, from tri- ‘three’ + veda ‘(sacred) knowledge’. The Vedas are the oldest sacred texts of the Hindu religion. Three of them are regarded as primary but a fourth one was added later. See also Tripathi.
