Family name origins & meanings
- Welsh : from the personal name Tudur, which is of ancient Celtic origin and unexplained etymology. It has sometimes been erroneously taken as a Welsh equivalent of Latin Theodorus, Greek Theodōros (see Theodore), for which the usual Welsh form is Tewdwr.
- The Tudor royal family, English sovereigns from the accession of Henry VII in 1485 to the death of Elizabeth I in 1603, were of Welsh origin, being descended from Owain ap Maredudd ap Tudur, who held lands at Penmynydd in Anglesey.
