Family name origins & meanings

  • Irish : adopted as an English equivalent of Gaelic Ó Tuaruis(c), an altered form of Ó hUarghuis ‘descendant of Uarghus’ meaning ‘cold choice’. The English form is a translation of tuairisc ‘tidings’, a word which is in fact unrelated to the Gaelic name. Ó hUarghuis has also been mistranslated as Waters or Caldwell, being taken as Ó Fuaruisce ‘son of cold water’.
