Family name origins & meanings
- Cornish : reduced form of Treverran, a habitational name from Treverran in the parish of Tywardreath, so called from Cornish tre ‘homestead’, ‘settlement’ + a second element of unknown original form and meaning. Alternatively it may derive from Veryan near Tregony. This latter place name is a shortened version of Saint Veryan, itself the result of a misinterpretation of the form Symphorianus recorded from 1278 onwards. The church there was dedicated to a certain St. Symphorianus, probably the 2nd-century martyr of Autun revered in France.
