Family name origins & meanings

  • Finnish (Vuori) : ornamental name from vuori ‘mountain’. It is found throughout Finland. During the name conversion movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this was one of the words denoting natural features taken by Finns as surnames to replace Swedish surnames, in this case particularly Swedish surnames containing the element berg ‘mountain’. In America, it may also be an abbreviation of Vourinen, a variant with the surname suffix -nen.
