Sitting in the sanctuary, moments before service was to begin, the mother of one of the boys approached me.
"Talia, my son called and told me not to come to court. There's been another charge or something. He said, 'If I came to court something might happen.' Do you know what's going on?"
I looked Black's mother in the eyes and lied. "I don't know."
I strongly recommended, "Call his lawyer."
"OK," she said, and walked away.
I didn't have the courage to say, "Your son is being charged with murder."
Service began.
I repented.
