Riding the subway, holding the Boston newspaper, I couldn't believe what I was reading.
Four people were shot, one dead, and all that the newspaper's letters-to-the-editors complained of was that the murder was reported to be in the South End.
"Why is the Lenox St/Shawmut Ave intersection where the shooting took place continuously referred to as the 'South End'?"
"I do agree with you that the incident happened within the 'South End precinct's sector,' but that shouldn't result in the media reporting the crime as happening in the 'South End.'"
"If the Back Bay's precinct happened to cover Hyde Park, would a Hyde Park crime be reported as happening in the Back Bay?"
I am a South End native and the Lenox Street Projects were always considered the South End. But since gentrification brought million-dollar condos and fancy boutiques to the South End, Lenox Street was suddenly reassigned to lower Roxbury. In Boston, Roxbury is considered a "bad" neighborhood.
A mother lost her son; yet the only concern being voiced was that the identification of where that young man suffered his last breath, be one that protected real estate value.
I got off the train. Angry.
