5 National Johnny Appleseed Day Crafts

It's apple season, and what better way to enjoy these delicious and nutritious fruits than to honor the pioneer who helped introduce and spread apples around the country. On September 26th, celebrate Johnny Appleseed Day and teach your little ones about this important part of American history with a few of these cute apple-themed crafts.

Appleseed "A"

Materials:

• White and red construction paper
• Scissors
• White school glue
• Apple seeds

Directions:

1. Draw out a large letter "A" on a sheet of white construction paper, then cut it out with scissors.
2. Glue the white "A" on top of a sheet of red construction paper.
3. Cut around the letter "A", leaving about 1/4-inch of red construction paper showing.
4. Squeeze a line of white school glue around the letter "A" and allow your child to press apple seeds on to the glue.
5. Allow the glue to dry completely before displaying the Appleseed "A".

Paper Plate Apple

Materials:

• Paper plate
• Red tempera paint
• Paintbrush
• Green tempera paint
• Green construction paper
• Scissors
• Glue stick
• Twig
• Tape

Directions:

1. Cover one side of a paper plate with red tempera paint using a paintbrush, then allow the paint to dry completely.
2. Cover your child's palm with green tempera paint, then press their palm on to a sheet of green construction paper. Allow the paint to dry.
3. Cut out the stamped hand print with scissors, and glue it to the top of the red paper plate.
4. Attach a small twig on to the back of the hand print leaf using tape to become the stem of the apple.

Coffee Filter Apple

Materials:

• Red construction paper
• Scissors
• Coffee filter
• Water-soluable markers
• Spray bottle
• Glue stick

Directions:

1. Cut out an apple shape from red construction paper, then cut out a smaller apple shape from the middle of the first to create an open space.
2. Lay a coffee filter on a flat surface, and use water-soluable markers to draw all over the surface of the filter. Try to use at least three different colors.
3. Fill a spray bottle with water, then spritz the coffee filter until damp. The colors should spread and bleed into each other. Let the filter dry completely.
4. Glue the colorful coffee filter on to the back of the apple cut out so that the colors peek through the opening.
5. Hang in a sunny window.

Tissue Paper Apple Tree

Materials:

• Cardboard roll
• Scissors
• Cardstock paper
• White school glue
• Green tissue paper
• Green construction paper
• Red buttons or pom poms

• Directions:

1. Cut a cardboard roll in half lengthwise, then glue the cut roll vertically on to a sheet of cardstock paper. Allow the glue to dry completely.
2. Cut out small square of tissue paper, scrunch them up, then glue them around the top of the cardboard roll to create the leaves of the tree. Let the glue dry completely.
3. Glue small red buttons or pom poms around the tissue paper tree to become apples.
