Dictionary Stories

Kids 5 and up

Who said dictionaries aren't works of fiction? With your child's help, dictionaries can tell some of the most imaginative tales of all.

  • Cull any three words from a dictionary, and ask your younger child to weave them into an original story.

  • Choose another three incongruous words, such as "lemon," "pickle," and "mouse," and ask your young storyteller to integrate them into a familiar tale.

  • Select three words, and have your child use them in a sentence that begins a story. Your child then chooses three more words from a dictionary, and challenges you to use them in the next line of the tale, and so on, until your chain story is complete.
