Ready to Play

Try this activity with your child. By being your child's playmate, you can encourage her to build her athletic skills.

Ready to Play

Time

  • 20 to 30 minutes

Materials

  • Basic sports equipment of any kind

Directions

  1. Confidence grows when your grade-school child feels skilled at basic sports. You can help to build those skills even if you can only work out once a week. Focus on learning to throw, catch, and kick balls properly.
  2. Help with the concept of following through with the arms and body weight when swinging or batting.
  3. Teach your child to step forward when throwing at a target and to build endurance by slowly jogging a regular, reasonable distance that builds over time.

Extensions

  • Attend a high school or little league game to stimulate interest with live action.
  • Mark regular practice sessions on a calendar so your child can anticipate them as special times.
  • Go out together to watch a sport that your child is not familiar with, like golf, tennis, or archery.
