Beeswax Candle

Materials

  • Sheet of beeswax
  • Utility knife
  • Newspaper and wax paper
  • Scissors
  • Yardstick Candlewick

Directions

  1. Place the beeswax on newspaper covered with wax paper.
  2. Lay the yardstick so it bisects the wax diagonally.
  3. Cut the wax in half along the yardstick with a utility knife. Set aside half the wax.
  4. Each wax triangle will make 1 candle.
  5. Turn the paper so the shortest edge of the wax triangle is near you.
  6. Cut a length of candlewick 2 inches longer than this edge.
  7. Lay the wick along this edge so a little wick sticks out beyond each end.
  8. Starting at this edge, help your child roll up the wax and press it into the wick.
  9. Work slowly so the warmth of her hands softens the wax.
  10. Continue rolling the wax, trying to keep the perpendicular edge (which will be the bottom of the candle) even.
  11. When you've finished, press the end of the wax triangle firmly into the candle.
  12. If the bottom of the candle is uneven, tap it gently on your work surface.
  13. Trim the wick to 1/2 inch at the top of the candle and cut off the wick at the bottom.
